Yeah... Finally a decent family photo!!!

I have been looking for a decent family photo. There were a few taken on various occasions which included 1.me + hubby (eh... with baby inside. note: I almost fainted when I saw this pic again. SO ugly lor. What was I thinking??? *tsk tsk*)

2. me + hubby + baby (at home) Note: She was still a new born... Was difficult to get to look in front... But we insisted in taking a shot anyway...

3. me + hubby + baby (at New York New York)

4. me + hubby + baby (at Sentosa) I would call this the "most romatic" family photo...

5. me + hubby + baby (during my bday celebration at New York New York) This is what I term as the worst family shot. Look at my ger and you know why! :p

So I told my hubby since we're bringing my girl in for a photo shoot, might as well get our portrait done nicely. Under the recommendation of a fellow mother in the Dec 08 SMH thread, we went to a studio near Expo for the photo shoot. The weather was not exactly perfect since it was rainy and dark. And of course, my little girl was not in the best of moods.

We still got about another one to two more weeks before we finally get the products of the photo shoot. But here are the raw pictures - unedited which I got the photo studio to send to me...

Here are the rest of the photos which the studio sent to me... There are of course more but these are the "sneak preview" photos which I excitedly got them to send me. : ) Enjoy!

Breastfeeding Talk...

I was suppose to be a guest of a Philips Avent Breastfeeding Talk. However, I needed to bring my little girl to the clinic so I missed the talk. It's so sad I did not get to talk to mothers to be and encourage them to breastfeed.

Jessica from Philips Avent read the script which I prepared early. It was meant as a guide to scope up what I was to say. After going home, I re-scoped the script... So here it is:

Hi everyone, it’s great to see so many mothers with their husbands in tow today! I remember when I was pregnant, I also wanted to attend breastfeeding talks. When I asked my husband to go with me, he was reluctant and replied "Huh? Go for this kind of talk for what?". It’s this same sentiment that makes most hubbies think: “My wife has decided to breastfeed. I do not need to do anything isn’t it? I cannot help nor teach her how to do it!” This is not true. There are many things that husbands can help!

Thinking back, I would not have survived the breastfeeding journey without my husband's support and encouragement. Let me give you some examples.

About 3 weeks into breastfeeding, I came down with high fever and chills at about 11pm. My breast was painful to touch, there were rock hard and I could not express any milk out. My confinement lady was most ridiculous, she called my mother in law to complain about how naughty I was and see now I got “zhou yue feng”! And for that I will have to drink a glass of alcohol every meal to get rid of the wind! My husband spent the entire night doing his research online and called the lactation consultant for help. I woke up at about 4am to find a note on the toilet mirror with steps of what I should do to clear the blockage that was causing the breast infection. He also defended me and told my confinement lady and mother in law that I had breast infection and not ZHOU YUE FENG!

After my confinement lady left, I had to care for my baby on my own. About 2 months into breastfeeding, I told my hubby that I wanted to stop. He told me "You are doing so well breastfeeding. Your supply is also not a problem. You agree that breastfeeding is good for our daughter, don't you think it is a waste to stop now after struggling so hard?" These little words of encouragement and reminder were all it took for me to continue. And to show his support for me, he would help me wash the bottles used to store my expressed breast milk. To make sure I had adequate rest, he also started to take over the night shifts. Time just flew by and my girl is already close to 9mths old!

Just in case the hubby think there’s only hard work, there is one that’s not too hard! You can help your wife massage her breast just before breastfeeding. Is that good or what??? J
The breastfeeding journey is different for every new mother. For me, I believe in the power of Mother Nature. She will definitely equip women with the ability to provide for the child. So, to me breastfeeding is a confidence trick. I believe I can, SO I will be able to do it! Prepare yourself mentally and believe that you can! Other than confidence, garner and surround yourself with people who will support your decision to breastfeed.

Supporters will deflect the "Boo-s" that come along the way! During my confinement, I would practise how to latch my baby. While I was doing that, my confinement lady would always come over and say: “Aiyoh Baby ke lian lar, ni de nai tou duan nar li xi de dao”. It was true that I had short nipples but her constant chatter was a contributing factor to why I eventually gave up latching my girl. To prevent her from eroding my confidence, I decided to pump exclusively. My hubby supported the decision and I never look back since!
During the early days, an experienced breastfeeding friend became my hotline to burning questions about breastfeeding. Other telephone numbers that you can have on hand includes the BMSG hotline and lactation consultants’ numbers. Remember that you are never alone in this journey!

I used to joke to my friends that I am a worry wart when it came to breastfeeding. I first started off with: "Will I ever have milk?" then it went to "Will I have enough for my baby?". When my supply was stable, I had a new worry "Is my milk good enough for my baby and is there anything I should do to make my milk quality better?" When it was time to return to work, I worried whether I will be able to pump in office...

My milk supply came on day 4. I thought this was slow until I heard that my neighbour's came only 10 days after the birth of her boy. My initial supply of milk was low (20ml), just enough for my little girl. I remember the theory of demand = Supply. So I pumped as often as my baby would drink. In your case, you should let my baby latch when she's hungry. The body will slowly but surely adjust till your baby has enough. I also did my research and found that nutrients in the breast milk are more or less constant. Hence there is no need to worry about quality! :)
I have returned to work for close to 5 months now and my little girl is still fully on breast milk. I was lucky to have bosses who were supportive of my decision to continue breastfeeding. However, a friend of mine was not so lucky. Like me, she did approach her bosses before Maternity Leave and the bosses were ok for her to express milk. After returning to work, the bosses became unhappy that she left her desk for about 1/2 hr to express milk and subsequently go for an hr's lunch break. She even got a warning email saying that she had gone against the company's HR practises! This is an important lesson!

Hence, you should discuss this with the bosses even before you go on maternity leave (e.g. during ur 3rd trimester). Discussion can include, when (e.g. is it during lunch, will 1/2 hr away from desk be acceptable?) and where will be a good time for you to express your breastmilk. Upon reaching an agreement, you can put it down in email so that there won't be disputes going forward.

How many times should I be pumping? From my personal experience, I arranged my pump times so I will only be pumping twice (once at 12 noon and at 3pm) during work hours. The 12 noon expression will coincide with lunch hour while the 3pm one would be during working hours. By pumping only once during official hours will seem more acceptable to most employers. There were of course occasions where I missed the 3pm expression! Remember that being held up by work is inevitable. The best you can do is to bear with the engorgement, finish up the work and quickly express out the milk!

And yes! Remember to inform your bosses on your first day back at work, what time you are expressing and whether you can be excused for 1/2 hr should meetings/discussions coincide with your expression time. :)

I remember frowning over which pump I should get. I would recommend one that is easy to operate and suits your needs. Some criteria which you would like to consider includes: size and weight of the pump (this is especially important if you are ferrying the pump to and fro), do you want manual or electric operation?, how comfortable would the breast pump be?,how easy is it to use?

Most of us may have heard of how difficult it is to use a manual breast pump. From my personal experience, I think a manual pump is not tedious and my yield can be higher than using an electric pump. Importantly, you will want to learn how to use the pump properly. Everyone is different so it is best if you can try or see how the breastpump works before making the purchase. Pumping exclusively is not an easy job. I would encourage you to latch as far as possible and only pump exclusively to feed your little ones if you are really left with no choice.

Remember that the key to successful breastfeeding is made up of 3 Ps and 1 S - persistence, perseverance, patience and Support. I hope all of you will decide to breastfeed and continue to breastfeed after returning to work!

Stage and Such Trial Class

Little girl attended her very first "playgroup" style of trial classes (thanks to Jowinbaby of SMH Dec 08!). I did not know how others were like, but because the school was new the curriculum seem to be too difficult for my little girl to understand. For example, they got our babies to do expressions in front of the mirror (Err... my girl only smiles and smack the mirror... then laugh at her own image. Doing expressions seem to be a tall order!). Then they read a story book to the babies... Through the entire time, none of the babies other than Gwen's was listening! All were busying crawling around the classroom (Yes. I admit that I was bored of the story telling... I guess it'll be better if my girl was a little older. Maybe 12 months?).

Anyhow, I thought the sensory portion was quite interesting... But it's actually a waste of money to pay money for it since I can get it done at home without much of a mess... (e.g. doing a shaker with rice or beans and coloured ice cubes). I let my little one touch the bright orange ice-cubes despite the fact that it will stain her beautiful dress ( the one that Uncle Jeff gave her).

Here are some photos of her at the trial with her peers (i.e. SMH Dec 08 babies).
In class with the rest of the Dec 08 babies (Ashlynne, Zachary, Claryce,Clarice, my little girl, Gerrard, Kayson)

Little girl with the shaker! (It's a disposable container with rice)

Yay, it's the end of class... (As you can see most of the babies are happy to be crawling on the stage... But Gwen's baby, Clarice has this to say: "WAHHHH... I want more stories!! I do not want the class to end!!!)

Developments...

It's been such a long time since I blogged isn't it? I have been trying for the past 2 weeks and it's pretty frustrating since I always fail to post it...

At about 8 months, my little one has been pulling herself to standing position and balancing herself in standing position by releasing her grip on tables, cot railing etc. She is able to stand without support for a few seconds. She can also slowly lower herself until she sits steadily on her bump...

She pulled me a special suprise performance this morning (age check: 8 months and 3 weeks)! She actually pulled herself to a standing position without gripping on the sofa... She also started to move along the sofa to pull at the bills which I have placed there. While pulling at the bills, I noted that her free hand was not holding on to anything!

Aren't babies an amazing lot? They can do so many things and learn so quickly. If we do not spend enough time with them, we will not be able to see these amazing feats!

I hope I can post her recent pictures and clips here soon...

Little Girl with Baby Shannon

A fellow mother, Christine from the SMH Dec Forum dropped by my house to pick up some items. She carried Baby Shannon along. She was going to leave when it struck me that we should seize the opportunity to take a photo of her little girl and mine... Both of them are Dec babies and only days apart... :)

It was pretty difficult to get a nice picture because my house was super messy... And there were loads of stuff on my sofa. LOLz, my hubby has been nagging at me for the longest time. Since Christine's hubby was waiting downstairs in the car, we hastily tried to take a few shots of the 2 little girls on the messy sofa...

Shannon is curious about something... What could it be? My little one is feeling a bit tired I think... Look at her moody expression... :P

My little girl is catching something on TV... But still not smiling...

Mummy Christine finally manage to get Shannon's attention and her little face lit up! Err... My girl is still staring at TV and the expression is ...

Milk STRIKE!

Just when I thought that my girl's milk intake has gone to a decent level, she decided to go on a milk strike. It is driving me crazy when I know her average intake should be around 600ml per day inclusive of 2 replacement of solids.

For about a month or so, her milk intake has increased from 3 milk feeds of between 4oz to 4.5oz (i.e. total of 360ml 405ml) to 3 milk feeds of about 5oz to 6oz (i.e. total of 450ml to 540ml) per day. Then all of a sudden, she started to cut back on her last feed... And now consistently for every of her feed, she drinks only 3oz (i.e. total of 270ml). That falls way below the 600ml intake she is suppose to be having!

Sigh... Did I feed her too much solids that's why she's not drinking enough? Should I cut back or continue to see if her milk strike is a passing phase? Or is it because she's not "exercising" enough so no avenue to expel her energy?

Anyway here's how much she's taking for solids...

About a full bowl of porridge (the above is pumpkin porridge with pork)

Left a little bit... ( I had to add water because she did not like the original SUPER thick version...)

Is this considered a lot for an almost 8 month baby??? I just realised I should have asked my PD during my visit to her recently. I forgot to mention that I let her take the pneumococcal jab. She only needs 3 jabs since she's more than 6 months when taking the very first of the series...

Little girl had her very first jar food on 8 Aug 2009 for dinner. Under the recommendation of a fellow December mother, I bought the Heinz Mum's Receipe series - Pumpkin Cous Cous.

Little girl ate the entire jar of it without struggle nor noise. She just open her mouth each time she was done swallowing. Makes me wonder if my porridge is that bad... *Sigh* But I do agree one thing with the fellow Decemeber mother, letting my girl eat jar food is easy and convinient. Not to mention fuss free since she will open her mouth each time she finish swallowing the food... *Hmmm....*

Mama's 28th Birthday Celebration

Opps... I just exposed my age... Yeah, I am not that young to begin with... As with every year, my parents celebrated my birthday. Last year, I chose Tim Sum (because I had craving for it while little girl was in my tummy). This year, I chose New York New York at West Coast. I am not a fan of western cuisine but since I signed up for the membership, I thought of giving it a shot. The bill came up to a horrid $200 (luckily I had a $15 discount voucher). I got a nice BIG cup (as big as a bowl) as the birthday surprise.

Little girl had a ball of a time as she got to pinch salmon, toast and potato... And not to mention that she was attracted to the round brown creamy thing that was brightly lit with sticks that seem to get shorter by the second (Yes! It was my birthday cake).

This post is also specially for Adeline, Luther and baby Bryan: Thank you for the cute little denim jumper! I wore it with another top though... Enjoy the photos! And my little girl is 7 months and 2 weeks old today! (which means another 2 more weeks to 8 months! WoooHoo...)

Just me and the cake... My sister insisted on putting so many candles and not just 1...

Trying to take a photo with little one...

She's just too distracted by the candles!

Trying to get a family shot and little girl is just plain irritated that both the cake and the candles are out of her reach... She plain refuse to sit, stand and just want to bend forward to grab those bright little lights... LOLz

Serious looks can kill! Haha. Don't the 2 of them look so murderously adorable?

Little girl with her favourite man... Papa...
If you're not giving me the cake, give me those candles PLEASE!!!!!!!

Can you see a morsel of food just on top of her mouth?

Evidence of a happy yiyi - Yeap she got to carry my girl without fuss...

Well the picture says everything... Ah ma is super happy! She got to carry my daughter without fuss AND she disappeared with my girl when I went to Cold Storage to grab some stuff... -_-'' I think this is the best photo my mum has taken with little girl so far... Going to resize and transfer to her phone as wall paper. I bet she will show it off to her colleagues! :)

Sashimi! YUMMY!

Uncle Jeff (what my girl should be calling her. He's my sister's girlfriend) gave my parents, hubby and I a buffet dinner treat at LATITUDE Bistro in ONE°15 Marina Club. The club has yatch facilities. The atmosphere was so serene and relaxing! I just wished I could hang out there for the entire night. [Okay back to reality... I got a baby now so it's just wishful thinking on my part...]

The buffet was great and I enjoyed the food. Not to mention I satisfied my craving for sashimi. My little girl was also a darling for sitting on the Rubbermaid high chair for 1 hour! Indeed a record time for her to sit there without need for our attention. It's the first time hubby and I could eat our dinner in peace! She was busy playing with the toy and not to mention enjoying the bread I gave her...It's such great fun to bring her out during dinner nowadays. Especially when I can find things for her to pinch from our dinner table.

I gave her quite a big piece of the bread for her to hold and chew. She seem to enjoy eating bits of food and chewing them. Seems like I can make her porridge a little chunkier.

Not only so, she smiled and made cute noises at my sister and parents. Through the entire evening, she made cute sharp pitch noises and coo-ed. What a sweetie pie! To end this wonderful evening, I decided that a family picture/potrait is in order... So here are some pictures taken this evening.

Ah ma was the happiest woman alive tonight because she could finally carry my girl without her crying for daddy...

Picture with Papa (Evidence that my little girl LOVES tissue paper. She won't hesistate to put it in her mouth too!)

Picture with Mama. We just reached the restaurant and mummy insist that a photo be taken this very second!

Our little family

With Yiyi... Of course, she was also the evening's happiest lady... Because she got to carry my little girl for a real long time!!!
